Questions About Cycling Around Riga's Dam?
Find answers about our flat loops, routes, and what to expect on the water.
The dam loops and left bank paths are genuinely flat—we're talking zero elevation gain around the reservoir and only minor undulation along the Daugava paths. Most of the route follows the water's edge or dedicated cycling infrastructure, which means smooth pavement and predictable terrain.
Our guided tours range from 2 to 3.5 hours depending on which route you choose. We include several rest stops with views of the hydroelectric dam and opportunities to learn about the engineering. You'll typically cover 12–18 km at a comfortable pace with plenty of time to take photos and catch your breath.
Not at all. These routes are designed for people getting back into cycling or cycling for the first time in years. If you can ride a bike and want to enjoy a couple hours outdoors without steep hills, you're ready.
Late spring through early autumn is ideal—May to September gives you warm weather, longer daylight, and the best views of the reservoir. The paths are well-maintained year-round, but summer offers the most comfortable riding conditions and the chance to see the hydroelectric dam in full operation during peak water flow.
Bring your own if you have one—just make sure the brakes work and the tires are inflated. If you don't own a bike, we can arrange a rental that's comfortable and well-maintained. Either way, we recommend having basic lights if you're thinking about our evening twilight route.
We always build in a proper rest stop with benches and views, and there's a café near the dam visitor area where you can grab coffee or a snack. We recommend bringing your own water bottle though—it's easier than carrying bags while cycling.
